Chapter Nineteen

We are sitting outside a small café, with two glasses of red wine, soaking up the Parisian atmosphere and taking the weight off our achy legs. It was a touristy kind of day today as Emma wanted to go and see places and things. And quite frankly I would have given her anything she wanted.

We had a guided tour around Le Louvre. We couldn’t go it alone because neither of us has much clue about art. We both made the obligatory comment: “It’s a lot smaller than I expected,” about the Mona Lisa. We stood in front of the massive paintings by whichever artists it was. I actually wasn’t listening because I was too busy watching Emma take it all in. Then we decided the best way to navigate Paris and see the most, was by boat up the Seine. It was my favourite part by far. It meant I could be with her, touch her, and not have to pretend I was interested in anything but her.

We’ve finished the touristy stuff for today and are just chilling, being together. She looks so relaxed and her beauty shines through. She’s wearing her jeans and battered pumps, her sloppy jumper that’s falling off her shoulders. Her hair is up in some kind of messy bun thing that leaves strands of hair all over the place. She is perfect imperfection and I never want this to end. We fly back tomorrow lunch time, and I know tonight is the last time I will see the unfiltered, easy, relaxed Emma for a while. Her brain will hit that organised-mum-on-a-mission stage, as the outside world starts to filter back in. So tonight, I am going to make the most of it.

She looks up at me as if my face has betrayed what I am thinking.

“What do you want to do this evening?” she asks. Just sit here and watch you for hours on end acting like a proper obsessed stalker?

“I’m not bothered. Anything you want,” I say instead.

“There must be something. I’ve dictated where we’ve been today and it’s our last evening here. We must do SOMETHING. We can’t just do nothing.”

“I would rather do nothing with you, than something with anyone else.” But she narrows her eyes at me like I’ve just delivered the cheesiest line in the world. But in all fairness to me, it’s 100% the truth. And then, as if some divine entity wanted to make me look like a liar, my phone vibrates in my pocket. I pull it out to see who is calling in case it is something I need to deal with, and then kill the call and put it back in my pocket.

“Who was that?” she asks. This could go either way. If I tell her it was nobody that will raise suspicions. If I tell her it was Ami that could also be bad. But she also may have seen the caller ID, so if I lie that could really blow up.

“It was just Ami,” I say, trying to keep my tone light.
